  • Since 2023, the Sidama Development Association (SDA) and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) have collaborated on modern beekeeping and fishing projects in Ethiopia’s Sidama Region. These initiatives aim to increase productivity, improve livelihoods, and promote sustainable practices in two key sectors:

  • Linking Sidama beekeepers to domestic and export markets, boosting incomes.

  • Increased pollination for coffee and other crops, supporting local agriculture.
  • Creation of jobs and alternative livelihoods, especially for women and youth.

  • Provision of modern fishing gear (nets, boats, storage equipment).
  • Training on sustainable fishing practices and post-harvest handling.
  • Cold storage and processing support to reduce post-catch losses.

  • Hawassa, Sidama Region – The International Labour Organization (ILO) has been a key strategic partner of the Sidama Development Association (SDA) since 2024, collaborating on impactful job creation initiatives across the Sidama Region.

  • Impact Since 2024 Launch:
  • ✓ 2,500+ youth trained in market-relevant skills

  • "This partnership represents our shared commitment to creating quality employment opportunities that drive inclusive economic growth," said SDA Executive Director Woynishet Mengesh. "The ILO's technical expertise complements our grassroots reach."
  • The collaboration aligns with Ethiopia's National Employment Policy and contributes to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). Plans include expanding digital skills training and strengthening the region's agribusiness value chains.

  • SNV and Sidama Development Association Partner on School Nutrition Program in Hawassa
  • Hawassa, Ethiopia – SNV Netherlands Development Organisation has partnered with the Sidama Development Association (SDA) to implement a transformative school feeding initiative, currently providing daily nutritious meals to over 5,000 disadvantaged students across five schools in Hawassa City.
  • Key Program Highlights:
  • ✔ Targeted Support: Reaching vulnerable children from low-income households
  • ✔ Daily Nutrition: Providing balanced meals to enhance learning capacity
  • ✔ Local Sourcing: 70% of ingredients procured from smallholder farmers
  • ✔ Holistic Approach: Combining feeding with nutrition education
  • "This program is about nourishing both minds and futures," said SDA's Education Program Coordinator. "We've already seen improved attendance and concentration in classrooms."
  • The initiative forms part of SNV's broader nutrition security programming in Ethiopia and aligns with the government's National School Feeding Policy.
